B2B and technology services

Fewer deals go quiet.More reach a decision.

In a long sales cycle nothing dies loudly. Deals go quiet, and quiet looks the same as busy until you check the pipeline three months later and find the same names in the same column.

Most B2B businesses I look at do not have a lead problem. They have a follow-through problem. Good conversations happen, the person on your side means to come back to it, and then a week of real work goes past. Nobody decided to let it go cold. It just did.

That is a system problem, not a discipline problem, and it is one of the more fixable things in an established business. Somebody has to own the next action, the next action has to be visible, and the pipeline has to tell you the truth without anyone having to tidy it up first.

Where the opportunity usually sits

Three stages, not five.

Every business is different and the Review is what settles it. But in this sector the answer is usually in one of these three, and saying so is more useful than pretending I have no idea until you pay me.

Convert

Where the opportunity usually is. A clear path to a decision, with an owner for every next action.

Engage

How a serious enquiry is answered, qualified and routed before anyone loses interest.

Compound

Reactivating the conversations that went quiet, which is the cheapest pipeline you will ever have.

What gets built

What a build here usually involves

Not a package. This is the shape a build in this sector tends to take once the Review has picked the one opportunity worth going after.

  • A sales process written down, so it can be followed rather than remembered
  • CRM that reflects reality, with pipeline visibility the team does not have to curate
  • Next-action ownership, so nothing sits in a state where it is nobody's turn
  • Follow-up that runs whether or not anyone remembers, without sounding automated
  • Reporting that tells you where deals actually stall, not where you assume they do

Fair questions

Three fair questions about this sector.

We already have a CRM. Is this a rip and replace?

Usually not. Most CRMs I meet are capable and half configured, which looks like a tool problem and is really a process problem. I would rather make the one you have tell the truth than sell you a migration.

Our sales cycle is nine months. How would you even measure this?

Probably not on revenue, at least not first. With a long cycle the honest early measures are things like response time, contacted-lead rate, and whether qualified opportunities are progressing at all. Those move within weeks and they are real.

Will this turn our follow-up into spam?

Not if it is built properly. The point is that a specific person owns a specific next action and the system reminds them, rather than a sequence firing at someone who already replied.

Your next move

Where is the next increase hiding in your business?

The Review looks at your actual numbers and tells you which stage is holding the rest back. You get the answer whether or not you build anything with me.
